Writing about music, its like dancing about architecture right? Kurt Vonnegut once memorably described history as a list of surprises that only succeeds in preparing you for the next surprise. So here's a story within a story, and maybe a few reasons for sticking with us and seeing it through.
We hatched our original gameplan in Brighton, England back in late 1999. Surrounded by talent looking for an outlet, it would have been rude to resist the advances of the musical itinerants regularly washing up on our shores. In short we strove to champion the eccentric and emulate the haphazard artistry of classic British, terminally idiosyncratic, thoroughly odd ball labels.
As unashamed fans of record labels and the mythologies behind them, we believe that record labels are about personalities and passion. The scatter brained logic of the Lumenessence family to date has more in common with the scruffy beginnings of your Factory's, your 4AD's or your Creation records than with any coherent gameplan, despite what history would have you believe.
As music fans ourselves, we love to make connections and to plot the coordinates of that ever elusive "Lumenessence sound" that gives meaning to all that we do here. So, after following the maps we have left in our tracks, please ponder our history at your leisure, find the essence of our sound for yourself, it's already in your possession.
